PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Proposal Outline: 

The SMARTFARMS consortium will develop technological platform and system that could integrate most advanced cloud based agriculture support systems, irrigation control and data collection networks including Internet of Things (IoT) and photonic devices for agriculture, cloud data bases, networks, geo localization (Galileo and EGNOS) and agriculture supporting robotics combined with farmers decision support based on data analytics, knowledge exploration and management.

The platform will be designed to support a large number of big farms and small farms.

The SMARTFARMS platform will address a need for a wide adoption of open, interoperable standards and will be designed to ensure that all integrated systems can talk to each other.

The new platform will allow easy addition and integration of other systems or platforms and could serve for benchmarking, allowing the farmers to choose the most appropriate combination of tools from different suppliers. The project will demonstrate innovative, useful, market driven, sustainable platform prototype/s that will be useful for our end users: farmers, agriculture experts and innovators.

 

The new platform advantages will be evaluated by several Pilots in different European countries and for different agriculture applications.

The following performance will be validated:

1.  The means to achieve high level of interoperability of different systems through reference architecture, semantics technologies and standardization framework that demonstrate communication exchange of data across different systems and platforms.

2. Ability to share data and generating knowledge via capturing and translating more and precise information.

3. High precision data capturing and a high degree of data sharing will enable decision support system delivering tailored advice at farm level, complementing and/or extending advisory services.

4. The core technical enablers for analyzing the amounts of data will be low-maintenance, robust and scalable, monitoring and communication systems as well as artificial intelligence and semantics technologies. These services will include detailed feedback to the farmers on appropriate practices and management strategies.

 

The consortium will also develop or integrate agriculture related Agri-DSS decision support system for delivering tailored advice at farm level that will include a benchmarking system on the productivity and sustainability performance of farms, services, technologies and practices. Some data models and semantic methods will be defined and developed to elicit performance indicators and support decision making process.

The platform advantages will be validated by large-scale piloting with involvement of the wide as possible farming sector in the piloting activities and ecosystem building; the digital innovation platform will support farmers, advisory services experts and agricultural innovators. The platform will be evaluated by a network of farms and in close cooperation with existing agricultural knowledge providers and innovation infrastructures of the different Member States and Associated Countries and regions. The platform advantages could be demonstrated for use in several agricultural sub-sectors like for example livestock, vegetable, fruit production or other.

The farmer's network will help to supply data for the platform to analyze. The data will be collected and analyzed to enable advisory and new knowledge creation, dissemination back to farmers, including economic and technical benchmarking. Advisory services based on local eco-systems will be investigated and linked to the pilot's data for analysis. The platforms will integrate and work as test-bed, testing and benchmarking new technologies and services.

The consortium will develop adequate data governance models defining the terms for access to data owned by another party. The pilots will cover wide geographic area within Europe.

The consortium could possible include partners from Italy, Greece ,Germany, Spain, Israel or other countries.

Required skills and Expertise: 

1. Farmers supporting organizations like Networks of farmers for specific agri. products.

network of farms that are in close cooperation with existing agricultural knowledge and innovation infrastructures in the different European States and Associated Countries. To support large-scale piloting with involvement of the wide farming sector and ecosystem building for evaluation of the digital innovation platform by farmers, service advisors and agricultural innovators.

2. Organizations supplying agricultural methods advisory services and new knowledge dissemination service, including economic and technical benchmarking. That can also allow for recruiting pilot farms and/or making available the necessary agriculture related data.

3. Developers of new technologies, processes and methods that support agriculture that could be integrated in new platform that will also work as test-bed, testing and benchmarking new technologies and services.

4. University/company experts in interoperability and openness related architectures and standards for interconnection between different technical systems. Experts in methods/technologies that allow for increased data sharing and the knowledge generation.

5. University/Research centers: Experts in the development of new concepts for benchmarking and information on the effectiveness of new technologies for agriculture.

6. Experts in agriculture related DSS decision support systems for delivering tailored advice at farm level,including a benchmarking on the productivity and sustainability performance of farms, services, technologies and practices. Experts in development of data models and semantic methods for extraction of the agriculture related performance indicators and supporting decision making.

7. Experts in agriculture process support systems, irrigation control and data collection networks including Internet of Things (IoT) and photonic devices for agriculture, cloud based data bases, networks, geo localization (Galileo and EGNOS) and agriculture supporting robotics combined with applications based on data analytics and knowledge management.

8. Big European distributor/manufacturer of agriculture supporting systems and equipment.  The system products marketing, which can do market research, business plans/technology exploitation plans leading to products and ensuring commercialization of the project results.

Description of work to be carried out by the partner(s) sought: 

1. Definition of the relevant State Of the Art of agriculture process support systems, Detailed Requirements specification, Market research, standardization and Exploitation planning.  

2. Research and development of new concepts for the integration of agricultural platforms and systems that could integrate most advanced cloud based agriculture support systems, irrigation control and data collection networks including Internet of Things (IoT) and photonic devices for agriculture, cloud data bases, networks, geo localization (Galileo and EGNOS) and agriculture supporting robotics combined with farmers decision support based on data analytics, knowledge exploration and management.

3. Agriculture experts and farmers for requirements specification, system operation, Data collection, validation and demonstration in specific relevant applications.

4. Design, integration and development of new platform infrastructure and software modules. Including cloud based data base and the agriculture related data collections capabilities.

5. Design and develop classification methods and algorithms for decision support system to analyze the agricultural data and automatically propose decision support indicators.   

6. Scientific and technological manager expert in agricultural technologies and systems.
