2017-02-23 Ukraine: Monitoring of Anthropogenic Pollution by Using a Bee Colony and Analysing the Impact of Such Pollution on It

Monitoring of Anthropogenic Pollution by Using a Bee Colony and Analysing the Impact of Such Pollution on It

Description of the project offered:
Our organization is interested and is looking for the partners for conducting researches in the following areas:

• Monitoring of anthropogenic pollution by using a bee colony and analysing the impact of such pollution.

• Researches on biological and non-medicamentous means to combat diseases of bees.

• Study of the factors affecting emergence and spread of neonicotinoid insecticides in bee products and surface waters in some areas of Ukraine.

Briefly about the topic “Monitoring of anthropogenic pollution by using a bee colony and analysing the impact of such pollution on it”.
The objective of the study is as follows:

• Optimization of the techniques of monitoring of contamination of the area around the existing nuclear power plants and areas of exclusion (areas of radioactive contamination, which formed as a consequence of the accident at the nuclear power plant) by using bee colonies;

• Analysis of the impact of radioactive contamination on bee colony living within the aforementioned areas and consuming waste products (pollen, water, nectar) obtained from these areas.

The main purpose is as follows:

• Checking the idea based on the determination of the degree of contamination of a certain area with heavy metals and radioactive elements by sampling and conducting certain laboratory tests of bee products (honey, pollen, wax, propolis) taken from these areas with help of bee colonies;

• Analysis of the impact of food containing heavy metals and radioactive elements on development of bee colonies (development cycle of larva of worker bees, drones, queens and indicator of ability of the queen to lay eggs, etc.) and preservation of biological and economically useful traits of the colony (melliferous capacity, wax productivity, bellicosity, propensity to swarming, winter hardiness, resistance to diseases, etc.).

Methodology
Honey bees (Apis mellifera) are closely related to the area on which they live.
When visiting plants bees are in direct contact with the environment and run the risk of accumulating various heavy metals and radioactive elements.
They uniformly collect nectar, pollen and propolis in a particular area within a radius of 2-3 km from the location of a bee colony (hive, hollow, etc.), so analysis of the content of different kinds of anthropogenic compounds in these products allows to characterize the degree of contamination of the area around the placement of bee colonies.
The content of heavy metals and radioactive elements in the samples of honey, pollen, propolis, wax and body of a bee reflects the contamination degree of air and soil of a certain area with these elements.
Comparison of the content of heavy metals and radioactive elements in the samples of honey, pollen, propolis and wax with the content of heavy metals and radioactive elements in the body of a bee will allow to find out which bee product is one of the best indicators for determining the contamination degree of an area.
Monitoring the development cycle of bee colony and preservation of biological and economically useful traits of newly formed colonies (melliferous capacity, wax productivity, bellicosity, propensity to swarming, winter hardiness, and resistance to diseases, etc.) will allow to conclude on the effect of anthropogenic pollution on wild bees living on the contaminated areas.
The expected impact of the project
The results obtained during this study will contribute to the following:

• study of the contamination degree of certain areas;

• development of regular routes of migration by the owners of the apiaries during the honey season;

• improvement of the breeding methods in beekeeping;

• preservation of bees and sustainable pollination of entomophile crops;

• development of the methods for improvement of the ecological situation of certain areas;

• environmental protection.

The NGO «Brotherhood of Ukrainian Beekeepers»unites small and medium entrepreneurs beekeepers in 16 regions of Ukraine directly involved in beekeeping, have apiaries and produce honey and bee products. The organization includes scientists and researchers from the leading scientific institutions of Ukraine, conducting researches on bee breeding and bee health, monitorsbee products with regard to the quality and safety parameters.A large production base of the members of the organization is involved in such researches. The organization regularly holds courses, seminars, trainings on the issues of application of modern technologies. The organization is involved into implementation and introduction of EU directives and regulations concerning phytosanitary measures in the beekeeping sector of Ukraine.
In each of the 16 separate units of the organization working in 16 regions of Ukraine beekeepers - manufacturers of bee products on their own apiaries apply knowledge and practices for effective work of bees – pollinators in order to obtain safe products. Every beekeeper on his apiary monitors health of every bee colony and quality of genetic material by regular sampling and sending such samples for analysis in specialized laboratories being the partners of the NGO «Brotherhood of Ukrainian Beekeepers ». Some individual owners of the apiaries are ready to provide their own bee colonies or its part for carrying out testing during researches. In each unit beekeepers-manufacturers obtain knowledge and practical skills at the trainings and seminars concerning use of safe methods of prevention and treatment of diseases of bees. The organization demonstrates theresults of the work of beekeepersat the international events of the International Beekeepers' Associations "Apimondia" and "Apislavia".
