PLECO: New Programming Languages and Eco-Systems for the Internet of Things

Description of the project offered: 
For call ICT-05-2017: Customised and low energy computing (including Low power processor technologies) -
1. Research and Innovation Actions: Programming environments and toolboxes for low energy and highly parallel computing.

Current practices in software development suffer from fundamental challenges in the area of large scale heterogeneous distributed systems. These rely on a computing paradigm which has been modelled on contemporary computer systems from the past several decades. This problem has been exacerbated by the recent emergence of highly distributed large-scale heterogeneous deployments of Internet of Things (IoT) devices for applications including Smart Homes, Smart Logistics, Smart Transport, Smart Surveillance and Smart Spaces. 

PLECO aims to create new programming languages and eco-systems for the Internet of things (IoT). It focuses on energy awareness, security, resilience and communications for the large infrastructure underpinning the next generation IoT. The aim is to enable the next generation of IoT applications and deployments to be developed both in an energy-aware, secure and cost-effective manner.

The outcomes of the PLECO project are a holistic and end-to-end platform for the next generation IoT. It is founded on new ways of representing energy-aware constructs in programming languages. This considers new algorithms, compilers, optimisation technology, security approaches and robustness of languages for IoT. This will enable a software paradigm supporting self-healing, adaptive and fault-tolerant IoT. The ultimate outcome of the PLECO project is an ecosystem used by IoT technology makers, IoT-application integrators and hobbyists through emerging communities.
PLECO will realise and evaluate its goals through multiple case studies. Smart cities and smart building infrastructure are an inevitable evolution of the integration of technologies. The PLECO project will demonstrate how a holistic approach will enable efficient development and deployment across cities and homes to facilitate energy-awareness, automation and healthcare.
