Development of New Inkjet Ink Based on Inorganic Nanopigments for Non-Porous Materials

Description of the project offered: 
This Project proposal is focused on the development of innovative advanced inkjet ink formulations, both conductive and non-conductive, based on inorganic nanopigments corresponding to the primary colours of cyan, magenta, yellow and black for non-porous materials such as ceramic, plastic and metal. These inorganic nanopigments will show high temperature and UV resistance, apart from being environmentally friendly and perfectly utilisable in creative industry sectors using high throughput digital printing equipment. The implementation of these new materials in these sectors will generate high added value to the traditional products mainly in terms of new creative designs or functionalities, high machining tolerances, enhanced aesthetic appearance, etc. The main challenge that currently shows those kinds of non-porous substrates is their high required temperature treatments for the correct fixation of inks on the surface. In this sense, current inkjet inks are based on organic substances which are degraded under these thermal conditions. Alternatively, traditional methods like screen printing are used implying the manufacture of a specific stencil for each colour of the design and its separate application over each stencil coupled with a mesh. However, the pigments used for suitable temperature resistance are based on existing inorganic compounds which cannot be directly applied to inkjet, since their macrometric sizes block printhead nozzles. Thus, this Project proposal presents an innovative approach focused on the development and demonstration of advanced inkjet inks, based on new homogeneous pigments made of specific complex compositions of mixed/doped nanooxides produced by versatile and scalable FSP technology, for common inkjet printing and suitable to be fixed over non-porous substrates showing high weathering resistance for outdoor applications.

The consortium of this project will be composed by around 17 partners. And the pending required partners are: 
- Inkjet printer manufactures (companies, SMEs).
- RTDs with expertise in curing technologies of inkjet inks.
- Qualified specialists in colour characterisations.
- End-users in decorative fields (companies, SMEs).
- Experts in simulation and computational methods for the complete optimisation of the proposed inkjet inks in terms of rheological and thermal properties, particle-dynamics and molecular-dynamics simulators and also, in relation with the ink-jet deposition process such as droplet formation, droplet spreading on a substrate, droplet evaporation, etc.
