Description of the project offered: 
The Internet of Things (IoT) is a relatively new concept which aims to connect physical devices, vehicles, buildings and other items embedded with electronics, software, sensors, actuators (objects or things) in order to enable these to collect, exchange data and to provide a more direct integration of the real world into information systems, resulting in improved economic benefits. 
This project proposal focuses on building an open IoT platform to facilitate the connection of real-world things over Internet and the interaction with these objects. Similar to Google’s Physical Web platform, this proposal aims to provide a Web of Things (WoT) solution which can integrate and provide seamless interaction to physical objects and locations, integrating sensing, actuating, energy harvesting, networking and interface technologies. 
On the physical level, the solution proposes equipping each object with commercial electronic beacons. These are Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) devices and have the advantages of high energy efficiency and widespread use. Users can identify the objects by utilizing an appropriate mobile application which reads the URL broadcasted them. In addition to the current solution, some objects can be connected to the Internet to provide data and events.
Based on the flexibility provided by URLs, the platform will provide access to objects modelled as web pages stored on a central server. Thus access is provided regardless of the physical context. Also, since the solution is built on top of the URLs, it benefits from the web security model (e.g., HTTPS). Going further from the existing solution, our platform will implement capabilities such as object searching, operating on events from objects (publish, consume, aggregate, filter, re-publish and search for), while being compatible with existing international developments addressing object identity management, discovery services, virtualization of objects, devices and infrastructures and trusted IoT approaches. Thus, the objects connected to the Internet will be accessible through the platform. Also, connectivity and intelligence, actuation and control features, linkage to modular and ad-hoc cloud services, data analytics and open APIs as well as semantic interoperability across use cases and conflict resolution are taken into consideration.
