Study and Development of Software System for Identification of Equipment for Digital Audio, Photo and Video Recording


Description of the project offered: 
A team of Ukrainian scientists from a number of universities and forensic practitioners for some 8 years has studied the problem of creating a tool for identification of equipment for digital audio-, photo- and video recording and establishing the fact of editing of digital files. A lot of efforts were made to find in digital files a complex of unique features (‘digital footprint’) particular to a certain piece of recording equipment.
The main premise of the study was that every single analogue-to-digital converter, clock generator, amplifier, as well as the rest of the components of digital recording channel, has its own unique particular features (nonlinearity, technological defects, etc.). At least some of these recorded features can afterwards be detected and identified by certain methods of processing and analysis of audio- and videoinformation.
The studies concluded with the creation of pilot software for identification of recording equipment.
For this software to be implemented into the casework it needs some modification and fine-tuning. Further study is necessary including suitability testing on different groups of equipment (curve construction for errors of first and second kinds, software optimisation).
As far as we know our colleagues from EU have the same challenges.
The outcome is the creation of pilot software for identification. The software from the start is going to be multilingual and meet the needs of casework in the EU countries.
