2016-05-18 South Africa: The Remediation of Water Quality in Polluted Urban Rivers in by Means of Off-channel Constructed Wetland Systems

The Remediation of Water Quality in Polluted Urban Rivers in by Means of Off-channel Constructed Wetland Systems

Description of the project offered:
Within South Africa’s burgeoning urban areas both formal and informal development has taken place, which has in many cases resulted in low cost or slum areas being juxtaposed to luxurious golf or housing estates. The pressure that these developments has placed on the river systems has resulted in several of these systems being heavily polluted. An example of this impact is evident in the Hennops River system has received widespread media coverage due to there being more than 100 000 units of E. coli per 100 ml of water. Other major rivers in Gauteng which face a similar problem are the Apies and Jukskei rivers.

In order to remediate a river system such as the Hennops, a multipronged approach is required. Diffuse sources of pollution, such as poor sanitation and litter emanating from low cost or slum areas needs to be addressed at the origin of the contamination. Similarly, contamination emanating from point sources, such as the sites or the poor operation of the municipal waste water treatment works, need to be dealt with.

Further, the water that is already polluted needs to be treated. To this end we propose a study into the efficacy of a constructed wetland system to remediate the water quality in this water system. It is envisaged that water will be diverted from an existing weir by means of a constructed channel. This channel will extend beyond the 1 in 100 year return period floodlines (in order to protect the passive treatment system from flooding), and will allow the water to exit into a constructed wetland system. Suitable land has been identified for this research.
