Innovative Technology for the Production of Low Carbon Steel by Direct Recovery of Iron from Ore in the Liquid Phase without the Blast Furnace Process



Description of the project offered:

Modern industrial methods of production of liquid low-carbon steel from ore is environmentally harmful and energy-consuming.
Experimental and theoretical investigations of chemical and thermodynamic processes of direct reduction of iron ore in the liquid phase indicate that for production of 1 ton of liquid low-carbon steel we need:
1. Iron ore concentrate (iron content 65%) to 1.55 t;
2. Electricity - from 700 to 850 kWh;
3. Natural gas (calculated as methane) - from 150 to 200 m3;
4. Oxygen - from 47 to 57 m3.
The sum of these costs for average European prices indicates that it is comparable with the price of 1 ton of low-carbon steel scrap.
In the framework of this project it is proposed to conduct laboratory and industrial studies of the chemical and thermodynamic processes direct reduction of iron ore in the liquid phase with production of liquid low-carbon steel. In particular, it is planned to develop:
- industrial technology of metallurgical process for direct reduction of iron ore in the liquid phase with production of liquid low-carbon steel;
- metallurgical complexes of equipment for the production of liquid low-carbon steel process for the direct reduction of iron ore in the liquid phase of various capacities;
- design decisions on the modernization of electrometallurgical plants operating with the steel scrap.
The development of this project, besides the obvious economic feasibility, will lead to the revival of the steel factories closed and not running at full capacity due to the large prices for scrap steel, and to the creation of new jobs in the industrial regions, and also will contribute actively to solving environmental problems
