Development of Technology and Creation of Complex for Utilization of the Zinc-Iron-Containing Sludge and Sludge of Coke Production

Existing modern technologies allow get zinc concentrate with a zinc content of 32 – 62.5% from raw materials.
In the production of iron and steel a large number of zinc-iron-containing dusts and sludge is captured during dry and wet gas cleaning.
Today every major steel plant in Europe has slurry tank with a volume of 2-6 million tons, in which the zinc content reaches 1.2 – 15.8 percent, and the content of iron - 45-58%.
In basic metallurgical processes it is very difficult to dispose the iron dust and sludge from gas cleaning due to the high content of zinc. While zinc compounds are lost irretrievably.
The project proposes to implement low-waste technology for increasing percentage of extracting Zn and Fe from semi products of the main metallurgical process. Proposed decision is based on pyrometallurgical recovery of zinc compounds by carbon with a parallel recovery of iron (Waelz process) for obtaining two marketable products:
- high-grade zinc concentrate with concentration of zinc up to 78 %, which is 10-15% higher than the zinc content at the best standard concentrate;
- partly metallized pellets with iron content of more than 57 % and with zinc content of 0.06% .
Technology, tested in industrial conditions, proposes to extract iron and zinc from prepared pellets consisting of dust and sludge mixture. This technology has patents.
The results of the developed technology can be used for modernization of main production cycle by means of additional industrial recycling complex with possible total capacity of over 200 thousand tons per year.
The development of this project, besides the obvious economic feasibility and possibilities of duplication, will contribute actively to solving environmental problems and also will lead to the creation of new jobs in the industrial regions.
