High-Resolution THz Radiospectroscopic System for Study of Materials with Radically New Technologies at Wide Range of Temperatures and Magnetic Fields



Description of the project offered: 
In recent years, researchers and engineers are increasingly focused on the investigation of the properties of metamaterials – composite artificial environments. Low-loss metamaterials and composite materials, that exhibit narrow-band resonances (surface waves, defect modes, effects of interaction of surface and bulk waves) (see ref. [1, 2]) are of the special interest for the telecommunications and electronics in gigahertz and terahertz frequency bands. Investigation of materials with such characteristics requires the special high-precision and high-sensitivity techniques and instruments. One of the most promising techniques is an application of whispering gallery mode disk dielectric resonator (WGM DDR) as a resonance cells of low-temperature spectrometers which allow to investigate metamaterials as well as quantum liquids. At low temperatures WGM DDR demonstrates very high Q-factor (up to 1 000 000) which is close to values usually observed by molecular spectroscopy. The effectiveness of this technique is confirmed by new results obtained by our team, namely: the resonance cell for magnetic resonance studies on the basis of DDR is created; the hysteresis of temperature characteristics of losses of electromagnetic energy in liquid helium as one of the effects of the interaction of electromagnetic radiation with this quantum liquid is revealed. In the framework of proposed project we suppose to combine the techniques which are commonly used by low-temperature physics, radiospectroscopy, molecular spectroscopy for research of prospective composite materials and quantum liquids.

Thus, the purpose of the proposal is design of high resolution cryogenic THz spectrometer system for investigation of electromagnetic characteristics of advanced composite low-loss materials, metamaterials, other materials and media, which belong to materials with radically new technologies.

The authors have long-term experience in developing oscillators of GHz and THz frequency bands and digital frequency synthesis. The unique equipment and experienced professionals with practice of manufacture of millimeter-wave electronics devices, components and resonators equally with optical and cryogenic equipment are available.
