2016-03-05 Kazakhystan: Phylogenetic Relationships and the History of Distribution of Endemic Minnows (Phoxininae) of the Balkhash-Alakol and the Issyk-Kul Catchment Basins

Phylogenetic Relationships and the History of Distribution of Endemic Minnows (Phoxininae) of the Balkhash-Alakol and the Issyk-Kul Catchment Basins

Description of the project offered:
Endemic species of minnows (Cyprinidae, Phoxininae), inhabiting endorheic basin of the Lake Balkhash, Alakol lake system and Lake Issyk-Kul are an important component of biodiversity of Central Asia, as well as a great object of phylogenetic and phylogeographic studies. Currently, systematics and diversity of this group of fishes remain poorly known. Reconstruction of the history of their distribution can serve to verify the paleohydrographic and paleogeographic hypotheses.
Within the framework of this project, the phylogenetic relationships of endemic minnows will be investigated, with the involvement of more precise and unambiguous morphological and genetic characters, rather than the used earlier methods of classical morphometry of fishes. Phylogenetic analysis will be performed using the methods of maximum parsimony and Bayesian inference.
This study will provide the latest information on the species composition and diversity of endemic minnows of Central Asia, it will help reconstruct the probable path of their distribution in the separated basins of the Lake Balkhash, Alakol lake system and the Lake Issyk-Kul in the past, and will also allow to promote or support the hypothesis of past hydrological contacts and exchange of fish fauna among these pools. Due to the assumptions about the loss of habitat and reducing the number of endemic minnow, the planned study will also identify Evolutionary Significant Units, necessary for making the measures to protect the unique endemic.
