2016-02-28 Italy: Reducing Environment Footprint by Saving Energy, Waste and Water in Wine Making Production

Reducing Environment Footprint by Saving Energy, Waste and Water in Wine Making Production

Description of the project offered:
Cantine Riunite&Civ are involved in studying and implementing a system to face some critical issues that should affect every beverage company with a bottling plant and winemaking centre.
These issues are:

- The use of lime during desulfurization in winemaking process creates the problem of spent lime production, a special waste difficult to dispose of in landfill.
- The high energy consumption, sometimes in a non homogeneous way, due the bottling lines and cooling capacity, the water consumption and the difficulty of retrieving some types of water, (i.e. bottle washing water rich in silicates)
- The inhomogeneous quality of biological sewage treatment

Our purpose is to identify techniques to reduce the origin of energy loss and increasing the reuse o water and waste in our production process. By establishing an industrial research project, to be carried out in collaboration with other European companies affected by the same or related problems and with the contribute of research institutes and universities, the company intends to submit a project for funding to the European LIFE program .
Considering those critical issues, the will of Cantine Riunite&Civ is to experiment and develop new ways of production to reach the following main objectives:

- Studying the waterwaste of concentrator and desulfurizer in order to better control the sewage water treatment, also trying to reduce the production of waste (i.e. creating Secondary Raw Materials for other industries instead of waste)
- Setting up a system " neuronal " energy control in the most appropriate mode, looking in every case at the energy saving

- Reducing consumption of water or reusing the treated water for other technological purposes

- Certifying with our own environmental protocol objectives of environmental footprint and measuring the improvement through the help of a certification body.
Project proposer:   Cantine Riunite&Civ (Italy)
Partner role:  Project coordinator
Partner organisation:  Industry
Call for proposal title:  N/A

Description of the collaboration sought:
We propose a partnership with other beverage companies, not only in the winemaking sector, with all or some of our issues: energy and water saving, water sewage treatment, waste recycling.
Wine maker, breweries or fruit juice industry could join us to participate in our research, managed with the scientific support of Italian and foreign universities.
Our goal is to develop a standardized and validated protocol to reduce environmental footprint for us and our partner in the beverage industry.
Expertise sought: Sustainable development, Waste management, Environmental protection, Water resource management, Food, Agriculture,
