Development of New Energy Effective Technology of Town Sewage Sludge Processing with Heat and Electricity Production

Description of the project offered: 
Project idea.
The idea of the project is to develop new technology for processing sludge from aeration plants of urban waste water, key element in which is the process of gasification. The final products of the development of the proposed technologies are generator gas and solid coke residue. Produced gas is used to generate electricity for own use and for sale. Coke residue as extremely hard granules may be used as filler in road construction.
Processing of sludge is one of the challenges of sustainable urban development of the European continent.

Existing state of project. 
Confidence in the successful implementation of the proposed technology of energy and environmental efficiency of processing sludge from municipal sewerage wastewater sludge residue give the results of an experimental study of gasification process was carried out on the experimental setup that was developed at the Institute of gas NASU (Kyiv). The studies were conducted in Poland. Pre-dried and examined in a rotary kiln granular sludge seeded from aerotank. Analysis of the sludge was performed in a certified laboratory and shows that net calorific value of the sludge was 14 500 kJ / kg, that corresponds to the calorific value of lignite and characterizes sludge as energetically valuable product.
Setting up of a complex with 1.8 MW installed capacity for wood pellets gasification is an example of the development and implementation of biomass gasification technology and equipment. The complex has been operated at Paper Mill at Zhytomir region, Ukraine, since January 2011. The substitution of natural gas with producer gas did not result in the boiler productivity reduction.
Based on the considerable experience of the Institute of gas NASU research and commercialization of biomass gasification, as well as the results of an experimental study of the process of gasification of sewage sludge in Poland, Institute in cooperation with Polish companies «CARBONEX» and «ECOTOP» offers technology for processing and disposal of municipal wastewater sludge using hybrid dryers gasification of dried sludge and on this basis the production of electrical energy.
Proposed industrial complex will have a capacity of processing sludge 900t per day at an initial moisture content of 97%. On the section separating moisture quantity of processed material is reduced to 135 t/day, and after drying - 30t/day at a humidity of 9.7%. Granulated, and dried sludge is fed to the gasifier. Generator gas enters the gas engine electric power of 250 kW, having also heat utilizers (CHP). The complex is equipped with 6 such facilities with total capacity of 1500 kW. 
Rough estimate cost of the basic equipment of 700-900 thousand Euro.

Target of project.
Construction of the pilot plant of cities sewage sludge processing on gasification technology for their performance on the wet mud of 100 t/day. A study of all the constituent elements of the process. Technical design of industrial installations for the offer to investors.

Content of researches – thermodynamic and thermochemical calculations of producer gas and residue content, laboratory scaled experimental research of drying, heating, chemical performance of raw material, producer gas and residue content, examination of farther most effective of producer gas and residue utilization possibilities. Pilot plant project development and building.
