2016-01-28 Egypt: Equine Joint Diseases

Description of the project offered:
Arthritis is a common affection in equines. The careers of many performance horses and donkeys are impaired or prematurely curtailed as a consequence of lameness due to arthritis.
Surveys have confirmed that approximately 60% of lameness problems are related to osteoarthritis.
A study conducted by the United State Department of Agriculture's (USDA) National Animal Health Monitoring System (NAHMS) in 1998 estimated the total annual cost of lameness to be $678 million to $1 billion, with 66% attributed to loss of use.
Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common disease affecting the joints in humans and among the most important causes of pain, disability and economic loss in all populations. In 2008 it was estimated that nearly 27 million adults in the United States have clinical OA (up from the estimate of 21 million for 1995). There are also estimates of 100 million people with OA in the European Union.

the aim of the project is:
• Study the pathological and healing finding of experimental induced joint disease.
• Evaluation of new biological therapies (PRP and stem cells) on clinical signs, synovial fluid and histopathological finding in experimentally induced osteoarthritis
