2016-01-03 Ukraine: Open Lab on Genetics of Actinobacteria

Open Lab on Genetics of Actinobacteria

Description of the project offered:
I am Professor of Genetics at the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv (Ukraine) and teach several courses for undergraduates. Also, I run a small research group of PhD students and serve as an advisor of undergraduate projects; my lab provides expertise and instrumental access for selected bright high-schoolers from my city to take a chance to do research project in the area of bacterial genetics (so called Small Academy of Sciences). I can attest that our pupils and first-year students possess tremendous potential as researchers, but this potential gets dissipated and gradually lost within framework of current Ukrainian educational system; after 5 years of formal education students' heads are filled with textbook cliches... Three key factors contribute to this sad situation: very low percentage of involvement of students into practical lab work; formal (textbook) education is disconnected from real problems; there is very low or no public appreciation of what is going on in University labs. I propose to use our laboratory as a new model for practice-oritented education through research. Our educational-research activity will be: i. based on studies of actinobacteria; ii. heavily shifted to practical work (using enhanced undergaduate projects); iii. and focused on real-life problems where actinobacteria are relevant; iv. carried out with close engagement of media (local TV and newspapers) and entreprenuers interested in the outcome of our work. For example, there is huge coal mine dump near Lviv (actually, the biggest one in Europe), which is the source of a bunch of ecological problems for our region. Re-forestation of this site is one of the ways to tackle the problem. However, all current attempts to plant the dump have failed, most likely because we first need to select right bacteria for plants to grow under hostile conditions of the dump. We can develop multifaceted program where researchers, students, pupils and society (citizens, media and coal-mining industry representatives) are involved in seeking and publicizing the solutions for real-life problem using the power of bacterial genetics. Odorous emanations from local sewage sites is another actinobacteria-related problem of Lviv, where society and University could join their forces for the mutual benefit.
