Development of Technology of Increasing Lifetime of Metallurgical Equipment Parts by Plasma Processing

Currently the ways to improve the reliability of parts of metallurgical equipment (for example, mill rolls, etc.) by casting methods are practically exhausted or limited because of the scarcity and high cost of alloying elements. One of the promising methods of increasing stability of metal products is plasma hardening at low currents. Compared with other surface hardening technologies this method does not require large capital outlays, easy to implement and maintain, reliable in hardware performance, and is also available in the fulfillment.
A significant advantage of plasma hardening at low currents (20...80 A) compared with a plasma at high currents (more than 250 A), a flame and electro-contact heating method is to obtain a differential high power density (more than 103 W/sm2) integrated with low thermal capacity (less than 30 kW), which is achieved for a specific combination of parameters. It predetermines low level of thermal stresses during processing and the elimination of cracking of the hardened products. 
At the moment the extension of the scope of plasma technology does not occur. One of the reasons is the lack of generalized theoretical and practical results of the plasma arc hardening of parts operating under conditions of intensive wear and made from different materials.

As a result of this project it is planned to establish:
- technological parameters of plasma treatment of working surface of parts with plasma arc current from 80 A to 250 A;
- technological recommendations for plasma treatment of working surfaces of metallurgical equipment parts; 
- the method of calculation of main power parameters of plasma processing, which will be used in the design and manufacturing of plasma systems;
- recommendations on the configuration of the plasma processing equipment and tooling;

The use of the results achieved by this project will allow to increase the service life of parts of metallurgical equipment by 20-30 %.
