Spotlight on Critical Outbreak of Pests: The Case of Xylella Fastidiosa

Description of the project offered:
Xylella fastidiosa is a gram-negative bacteria which invades the xylem of different plant species. Some strains of X. fastidiosa are responsible for the CoDiRO, a disease present in Apulia since 2013 which causes a progressive death of olive trees. Its genome, around 2.5 Mbp, has been completely sequenced and consists of around 2000 protein-coding genes, 49 tRNAs, 6 rRNAs and 2 non coding RNAs. Many of its genes show a high homology with Xantomonas campestris hortologues, another plant infectant with similar biologic characteristics.
X. fastidiosa is spread by host insects which feed of crude sap from leaf xylem vessels; in Italy these are Philaneus spumaria, Neophilaneus camnpestris and Euscelis lineolatus. Bacteria enter the xylem this way and start degrading components of the extracellular wall by secreting lytic enzymes. Polysaccharides produced during the infection can clog the xylem vessels, blocking sap circulation and causing branch death.
Biology of X. fastidiosa shows a relevant role for intercellular communication, possibly due to diffusible factors secreted by bacterial cells which go into the plant circulation during infection.

We are preparing a proposal, in collaboration with Agronomists, Plant Biologists, (from Universities) and SMEs, for the development of an ensemble model (called XylMod) to geographically map the risk of infection by Xylella fastidiosa.
