Development of an Active Magnetic Refrigerator

Description of the project offered: 
We’re writing on behalf of prof. Adriana Greco, Associate Professor of industrial technical physics at Naples University “Federico II”.
We propose a project about magnetic refrigeration. It’s a new, innovative refrigeration technique based on eco-friendly solid-state materials that act as a refrigerant by magneto-caloric effect (MCE); MR aims to substitute the nowadays diffused vapor compression refrigeration (VCR) whom is based on fluid-state materials as refrigerant. 
The main goals of the project are:
• Through theoretical and numerical models, conducting a performance analysis of a thermodynamic cycle based on magnetic refrigeration in terms of energy efficiency examining the variations of maximum temperature achievable. In this way one can individuate the maximum reference values in order to compare them with the ones of refrigerating technologies currently in use, in order to identify the potential of this innovative technology. This analysis will be conducted under different ranges of temperature (from cryogenic to room temperature) in order to explore different applications in the field of refrigeration.
• Once that the most promising fields of use have been identified, we intend to make a theoretical analysis of the benefits, both in ecological and economic terms. 
• Analysis of the magnetocaloric material most suitable to work with respect to every operating field. An accurate research can be carried out on new magnetocaloric materials to identify the best materials candidates to magnetic refrigeration, better and cheaper than gadolinium which is the nowadays benchmark material. In the above mentioned analysis we want to focus the attention on the characterization of such materials in terms of magnetocaloric effect and on the synthesis process of the materials in order to identify the most promising ones. Particular attention will be placed on a new generation of materials, that are characterized by: low cost, great magnetocaloric effect, simple synthesis process, completely harmless to the environment, non-flammable and not toxic. This characterization will be both theoretical and experimental.
• Theoretical analysis of an optimal magnetic system. In this part we want to focus the attention on the magnetic field required to give rise to magnetocaloric effect. We want to individuate the optimal configurations of the magnetic group with respect to every application studied, in order to maximize the magnetic field intensity and at the same time reducing the mass and the volume occupied by magnets to make cheaper and more compact the refrigerator.
• Based on the results obtained we intend to develop one or more experimental prototypes on the basis of experience gained. In particular in order to overcome the limits of the actual developed prototypes, a new generation prototype, can be designed with a new structure able to overcome the mechanical limits identified in a reduction of losses for dead volume and friction and a decreasing of Eddy currents induced in the air gap. Therefore, attention should be drawn to the development of new experimental prototypes, with a cooling power suitable for commercial applications and with higher energetic performances than those of traditional vapour compression plants. 
• Wide range of experimental tests in order to characterize the prototypes with the new materials identified in order to achieve high energy efficiency and significant temperature variations.
