2015-06-19 Italy: Cellulosic Biopolymers for Multifunctional Microfibers by Microfluidic Chip Technology

Cellulosic Biopolymers for Multifunctional Microfibers by Microfluidic Chip Technology

Description of the project offered:
A key aspect of tissue engineering is the development of scaffolds that support, stimulate and direct the growth of specific cells. Scaffolds in a fibrous form are potential appealing for tissue engineering since they can enable the guided cell growth, alignment and migration. Fibers can be fabricated to 3D woven or non-woven scaffold forms in sheet and tubular structure. These scaffolds are generally fabricated from polymeric biomaterials such as chitosan, hyaluronic acid, silk, alginate, collagen, or synthetic biodegradable polymers.
Very few examples, if none, are available for microfibers produced with cellulosic biopolymers.
In this respect we propose the use of microfluidic techniques for the production of cellulosic microfibers.
The polymers and methodology could provide new routes for in situ fabrication of micro/nanofibers.
