    The new system will leverage on a digital model capable of estimating the stress and strain states of cracked and prestressed reinforced concrete structures based on observable crack pattern and a new generation of monitoring unit based on global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) technology.

    The outcome of the project is the continuous monitoring of the state of health, the remaining life and the residual strength of a structure that will potentially imply radical variations in the decision making process for the optimal use of the increasingly limited transport infrastructure investment funds. To this end, new visions and tools will be introduced to provide better estimates of the minimum investment to benefit ratio (including the reduction of all sorts of indirect losses, such as downtime and abatement of industrial competitiveness) and to contain the expected death toll. Further this system will allow to monitor the functionality of the bridge infrastructure in case of extreme events such as earthquakes, crucial to allow safe movement of rescuers and people in general.
