2015-05-31 China: Entrepreneurship

Description of the project offered:
Returnee Entrepreneurs’ (REs’) networks for new firm formation in China, in the high technology sector, have recently been explored. The value of Returnee Entrepreneurs (REs) is recognised as a potential key element in China’s economic progress. More is understood, however, about their home networks, in provision of forming new firms, as opposed to their networks in their host countries for potential transnational activity. Preliminary research indicates REs’ propensity to exploit China’s domestic market. However, international networks may influence a potential to conduct transnational entrepreneurship. We propose an exploratory qualitative study using semi-structured, face-to-face interviews with Chinese transnational entrepreneurs (TEs) in the high-technology sector in Europe (and their network ties in China). Why do they engage in high tech transnational behaviour? What is the nature of their network ties in the process of forming and founding new firms? In what environments do they locate their new firms? The study will draw attention to the role of network relationships in developing markets for the internationalization of high tech firms in China to Europe (or vice versa) complementing recent pilot research on networks of high tech returnee entrepreneurs (REs) to China. The findings may enable the identification of specific types of networks as a key means of transforming TEs’ networks into sustained economic development in China and Europe.
